A few days after losing 8-0 to Cameroon, The Gambia’s women footballers are back, preparing to host the Indomitable Lioness on Wednesday in the second leg of the last round of qualifiers for the women’s nations cup to be played Morocco later this year.
This match is allowed by Caf to be played at the Independence Stadium which is banned to host international matches involving the senior male national team, the Scorpions.
However, the match on Wednesday is not open to fans.
Having conceded eight goals in Yaounde, the Queen Scorpions are logically and almost certainly on a lost battle to qualify, but stranger things have happened in football and the feeling is that the girls can spring some miracle to beat Cameroon 9-0, or cancel out all 8 goals to force penalty shootouts, a remote possibility by all accounts.
However, Coach Mariama Sowe’s team must show some respectability in their approach in this leg and not a total surrender.
