Tragic drama unfolded at Tanji beach on Wednesday when an unknown woman snatched a three-month-old baby from her mother’s stall and disappeared.
The baby is the son of Momodou Lamarana Barry and Fatoumatta Binta Jallow, the latter, a food vendor and resident of the popular fishing village.
The incident happened on Wednesday evening while the mother left the baby alone briefly while preparing food near her beach canteen.
According to sources close to the aggrieved family, the suspected snatcher often visits the canteen offering to help soothe the baby while his mother cooks. They could not give details of the suspect.
They said they have not been informed of a breakthrough in the search for their missing baby and “only received scanty information of a man detained at the Banjul crossing terminal carrying a baby”, whom they have not seen.
They asked for the public to contact the nearest police post if they have any information on the whereabouts of their son.
Police spokesperson ASP Lamin Njie said he was unaware of the incident but promised to find out and provide details when available.
