Four of them, sprinters Adama Jammeh, Tina Bass, Alieu Joof and Assan Faye are sponsored to attend the IAAF High Performance Centre in Dakar, Senegal, while Omar Jammeh, a long distance runner, will go to Kenya.
The scholarships, which will keep the athletes in their training posts until next year’s Summer Olympics games in Rio and beyond, was facilitated by the Gambia National Olympic Committee in collaboration with the Gambia Athletics Association, GAA.
According to official source, the athletes are expected to leave town as soon as all paper work and other formalities are done with.
Athletics sources said the scholarships will help the Gambia prepare her team for the Olympic Games and other events, especially as the tracks of the Gambia are under repairs.
