A Gambian teenage player is causing a sensation in Germany’s youth league.
He is Lamin Touray of Borussia Dortmund who has just been awarded best player in the 2016/17 German U15 football season, after helping his team win both the U15 league and the Super cup.
Touray’s most memorable game for Dortmund was a 3-1 win over Preußen Münster in the U15 super cup final.
Lamin, 14, is of Gambian parentage and was born in Basse Dambpa Kunda and moved with his parents to Dortmund, Germany at the age of 4. The young left attacker, who puts on the number 19 jersey, joined the Borussia Dortmund youth team two years ago and has since been a regular starter. He scored 11 goals and provided numerous of assists in the last football season alone.
In his two-year stay at the Borussia Dortmund youth team, Touray featured against teams in Europe such as (Arsenal,Ajax, Real Madrid, Benfica and Anderlecht among others.
Speaking to this The Standard, Lamin said he was very happy and honored to have won such an important award at just 14 years of age. ´´I am very happy and I want to thank, my teammates, coach and family for their support,”he told The Standard.
Reacting to his admirer’s comparison of him with Marco Reus, young Lamin said;” ´´When I play, my friends and other people say to me that I play like Reus. Am not trying to copy his style of play but rather playing my own way and trying to be myself”.
He said he admires France international Ousman Dambele.
Asked about Gambian football, Lamin said he does not know much about Gambian football now, but his future dream is to represent the country in major competitions like the African Nations and World Cup. ‘If the Gambia U-17 trainer needs me, I will be available,”he said confidently. Lamin does not only play football but he is also a Grade 8 student at a high school in Dortmund, and he speaks fluent Mandinka and Deutsch.
