The race for the title of Gambian football started on Friday.  For the first time in history, 16 teams are in the fray in top-flight first division.

Last year, 14 teams played a 26-match league won by Farato’s Fortune FC but following the relegation of the bottom two, four earned promotion from the second division to make up the new 16-team first division league.

On the opening day, Friday, Brikama United drew nil- nil against Marimoo at Yundum. At night on the same day at the Independence Stadium, Waa Banjul and Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) fought a goalless draw while Gamtel beat promoted Samger 2-0.There was no action on Saturday but as we went to press last night, Team Rhino was marking its debut in the first division with a clash against Gambia Ports Authority at Yundum as Banjul United meets Hawks and Elite United taking on Wallidan.
