A senior official closed to the Gambian team to the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Australia has been giving details how three of his contingent went missing on the very last day.
According to him, Modou Njie, a coach and Joko Colley, a minder of an under -age athlete, as well as Aboulie Assin failed to show up for the closing ceremony of the games where everyone was supposed to be present.
“We tried their phones but all were switched off and they did not turn up too at the airport for their flight back. I even contacted some Gambians we met there but they said they have not seen the trio, said our source,
According to the official, the matter was reported to the Australian police who informed them that since the trio has a valid visa to up May 15, they will not be considered illegal as at now.
Our source clarified that Colley went to the games as a minder of a 17-year-old athlete but she was not a coach as was previously misunderstood by the media. “Am disappointed that she abandoned the athlete who has come back home with us” our source lamented.
