The Ministry of health and Social Welfare wishes to inform the general public that Honourable Omar Sey, the Minister Of Health and Social Welfare, was on Tuesday, 18th November, 2014 honoured with an International Leadership Award in Health, by the organisers of the 2014 Global South-South Development Expo which took place in Washington Dc at the Headquarters of the Organisation of the American States.
Currently, the health honourable minister is in Washington DC leading the country’s delegation to this important event at the invitation of the UNDP Country Office, accompanied by Mr Ismaila Sanyang Permanent Secretary, Office of the President, Mr Mod K.Ceesay, Permanent Secretary, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs and the Mrs Ade Mamonyane Lekoetje, UNDP Resident Representative and Resident Coordinator to the Gambia.
The award is in recognition of The Gambia’s exceptional leadership and involvement in the health sector especially its effort, contribution and response to the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa. The organisers paid tribute to the government of The Gambia under the able leadership of His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhagi Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh Babili Mansa for being the first contributor to the AU Ebola Epidemic Fund of one million United States dollars donated to the affected countries of Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Reflecting on the award, Minister Omar Sey paid tribute to President Yahya Jammeh for providing the right leadership, guidance and foresight in shaping the national and regional response to the Ebola Virus Disease, the staff of Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Government Ministries, Department and Agencies that have contributed immensely to ensure an Ebola Free Gambia
He also extended gratitude to the UN System in The Gambia, private sector, NGOs, and other partners as well as the general public for their valuable contribution and cooperation to the health sector.
