President Adama Barrow yesterday presented half a million dalasis to The Gambia’s Olympic team and a brand-new car to athlete Gina Bass when he hosted them after jetting back from the Olympic Games. The president congratulated the team and officials for making the country proud.
Speaking at State House, the president of the Gambia National Olympic Committee, Dodou Capy Joof said the team has represented The Gambia with honour and dignity, raising the flag at the highest level possible.
“Indeed, with the political will your government under your leadership has assured us, we are well motivated to not only see the sky as the limit, but a stepping stone to our much-desired excellence in sports. I will continue to reiterate my unending appeal for more support to National Sports Associations’ annual subvention with monthly allowances to coaches. I know for certain that the government has many obligations, commitments, and priorities, but please accommodate sports development as a priority. Sports have now emerged as one of the fastest growing industries. We do not want to be left behind, as these Olympians have proven that we have the raw materials with great potentials as any other athlete in the world. Invest in sports development also to serve as another option in our strive to combat illegal migration and other social vices affecting our youth.”
