Takaful Ltd Gambia (Islamic Insurance) has given out GMD511,000 as zakat to the needy on Thursday at their main office in Pipeline.
There were four sets of beneficiaries; individuals, mosques, hospitals and for projects.
Ustass Drammeh, Secretary of the Sharia Committee, who also moderated the event, said that Takaful does not only give out Zakat, but also does profit sharing with participants. He said that unlike other insurance companies, Takaful does its best to satisfy their potential customers, since they operate strictly based on Islamic law. He told the beneficiaries that Takaful isn’t the one helping them, but it’s the other way around because through them, they are able to give out alms, which is the third pillar of Islam.
The CEO Ajaratou Sainabou Gaye Jallow urged everyone at the gathering to work with their Insurance company in order to help those in need, which she described as a reward from God. She assured that they will continue this trend for as long as they can. She thanked the Sharia committee, board members and her staff for making the company a success.
Though the zakat given had no strings attached, TAKAFUL wishes to pay visits to most of their beneficiaries and see the developments they are doing and decide on whether they will be worthy of being part of the next batch receiving zakat from them.
The availability of adequate water being a major problem in some parts of The Gambia, the company has intentions of building three or four wells at such places.
It was also announced that the annual profit sharing among participants will be held soon, but the date is yet to be disclosed to the public.
