THANK YOU GAMBIANS

Shortly after arriving to a hero’s welcome, Gambian international referee Bakary Papa Gassama told a large crowd who followed him from the airport across towns to Football House that his thoughts are always with them at all times.

“Whenever I step into the pitch, I always feel that am representing you Gambians who love me so much. I am overwhelmed by your support and good wishes and patriotism,” he said.

He added that he is humbled and equally elated to be of a great source of joy to many Gambians. “Everyone is happy; The GFF is happy, the football fraternity is happy and am also happy,” he said.

Hundreds turned up at the airport joined by other by- standers along the highway to cheer and escort the referee to Football House, all joyous that The Gambia has produced a rare personality in world football.

The convoy briefly stopped at the Abuko Abattoir where animal traders insisted on shaking his hands while others beat drums and chanted his name.

The referee is also expected to make another formal appearance at the Serekunda East Park at a later date to be greeted by more fans.
