The Gambia Cycling Association (GCA) has announced plans to stage a national tour, the first of its kind before December.

Momodou Jallow, vice president of the GCA said the event will cover the whole country and it’s designed to promote the sport as well as discover and scout talented cyclists. ”We want to make it easy for young people interested in the sport to access the association and get opportunities of further training and possible recruitment into the national team. We also have plans to mobilise resources to purchase bicycles, shoes and other professional kits so that young Gambians interested in the sport can be assisted to reach their potentials.  Currently, to become a cyclist one has to buy your own bicycle while the association would supply other kits from our limited stock,” Mr Jallow said.

He said the planned country- wide cycling would promote the sport around the country. He said there is already a recognized group of cyclists in the regions mainly at Farafenni where they regularly take part in an annual marathon.”The planned tour will expand the rural presence of  cycling and help build an annual national programme,” VP Jallow said.

Meanwhile a team of Gambian cyclists led by coach Sarjo Ceesay, himself a former Gambian international cyclist, recently returned from a tour in the Senegal, the Tour de Fleuve

where they won and defended the Pink and Blue jersey, earning a well-deserved trophy. The GCA is planning to meet the Minister of Sports to discuss the Senegal success and the planned national tour.
