‘She Awards’ is an excellent award event dedicated to honoring phenomenal Gambian women for their extraordinary achievements, resilience, and hard work in all facets of their lives.
The second edition was held last weekend at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara Conference Centre in Bijilo.
Women were nominated in many categories, with winners being recognized for their ongoing contributions to the country’s growth.
A high-class event began with a red carpet, with women dressed in the ideal attire to grace the occasion, in order to recognize and reward the work made by women. Cocktails, a musical interlude featuring the country’s most talented comic artist, Bright Stars Entertainment, and the lyrical voice of poets Jainaba Touray and Haddy Drammeh, who captured the attention of the entire audience with their flawless pieces.
Aji Yam Secka, the UDP’s deputy party leader, was among the awardees, receiving the Female Politician of the Year Award. She expressed happiness and honor to be announced winner, dedicating the award to all the women involved in politics.
“Being a female politician is not easy. You have to be determined because men are always in your back to pull your legs,” she said.
She encouraged women to actively engage in politics.
Former GRTS news nchor Fatoumatta Ceesay, who received the Media Personality of the Year Award, reflected on her nine years in the media prior to her recognition. “This award has truly honored and humbled me.”
The “She Awards” was established by Awa Gai. The purpose of the ceremony, according to Awa, is to recognize, celebrate, and provide flowers to the Gambian women and celebrate their determination while they are still alive.
Ms Gai emphasised that the Awards are more than just a platform for women to be recognized; “it also aims to motivate young girls to believe in themselves and their abilities,” she added.
“We are gathered here today knowing how well Gambian women have contributed towards to our society, social change and most importantly, the development of our beautiful country.
“For me, I knew the journey wouldn’t be easy and it came with a lot of commitment from myself and the entire team, the support of our partners and every individual who continues to hold space for Gambian women. Thank you all for your immense support and for gracing this occasion,” she told the gathering.
