Victorious Wafu Under-20 champions coach Mattar Mboge has taken to the social media to talk about the successful campaign in the Wafu Zone A as well as thanking fans and supporters among other things. Mattar’s message posted on his facebook page is reproduced below:
Humbled, proud and delighted to share the news that in my first international assignment as coach of The Gambia U-20s, we went and won our first trophy and gold medals!! A fantastic two weeks spent in Monrovia, Liberia for the WAFU Zone A U-20 2018 tournament, where we got out of a group containing Guinea, Senegal and Mali, beating Ivory Coast on penalties in the semi-final and then facing the hardest possible opponent in the form of the host country, Liberia, in the final. We also picked up three man of the match awards and our goalkeeper was selected as the best in the tournament. We also finished as the only unbeaten team in the tournament. It doesn’t get much better than that….
We also had the privilege to meet one of the greatest African footballers of all-time and Ballon D’or winner, who is now the President of Liberia. Thanks to George Weah for giving us the opportunity to meet him not only once but twice, (we even had lunch with him) and we were also given a substantial cash donation too. To say we are blessed is an understatement!
Many thanks to the players led by the captains Basiru Mbye, Saikou Touray and Alfusainey Jatta, the technical team, team manager Ousman Drammeh, head of delegation Rtd.
General Lang Tombong Tamba, President Lamin Kabba Bajo and the Executive, the legend Biri Biri, Dr Pa Lamin Beyai, Technical Director Sang Ndong, the strong Gambian contingent in Liberia, the tournament organisers, our Federation led by GS Lamin Jassey and all of our supporters and well-wishers. This is for you all!!
My thanks to you all for your messages of congratulations, I just hope that we were able to make our country proud and happy.
We must now work even harder to hunt for more trophies, prizes and gold…!
