The principal of Kairaba Senior and Junior Secondary School has clarified allegations made by parents of several students from Bakau who are seeking to enrol in the school but allegedly denied on the grounds that they are notorious and have no regards for the laws of the school.
A number of parents have walked to the offices of the Standard to complain that their children, after completing primary education at Old Bakau and Bakau Newtown Lower Basic schools, have been denied entry at the school despite being their choice.
However, Aghedo Mama the principal strongly denied any suggestions of such, saying the ‘non-enrolment of students from Bakau is as a result of the national education policy and not the alleged stubbornness’ of the children of Bakau.
“This is a misconception. There are new procedures involved in the transitioning of student’s and this transit is based on catchment areas. Remember it is the community of Bakau that went to the office of the former president to complain when they did not have an upper basic school and the president engaged the ministry to build a school which is Bakau Upper Basic and it is built only for the community of Bakau,” the principal explained.
She said the policy maintained that any child that finishes basic education in Bakau should transit to Bakau Upper Basic and not Kairaba.
“We have been receiving complaints from the Bakau Upper Basic authorities that we (Kairaba) are taking their students and the education authorities have taken a step to transit students from Bakau Proper and Bakau Newtown Lower Basic schools to Bakau Upper Basic”
The principal added that her school was given names of students from Serrekunda, Old Jeshwang and New Jeshwang Lower basic schools who are to be transited there for this year.
“So we cannot enrol students whose names have been sent to Bakau Upper Basic School. Were will we put students from Serrekunda and Jeshwang who are supposed to transit with us?”
