Nusrat Senior Secondary School has rebuffed claims of a mass exodus of teachers from the school.

In recent days, social media is full of reports that teachers have been leaving the school in large numbers because of one reason or the other. Many suggested that the problem has to do with the style of the new principal about which some teachers are not happy.

However, addressing a press conference at the school campus Issa Conteh, a senior teacher and head of science department, said: “We know for a fact that teachers do leave from one institution to the other, some for personal reasons while others do so to improve on their attainments.”

Conteh said it is a known fact also that since the Covid crisis started, the government has closed schools.

“So because of the closure of the school, a large part of the syllabus has not been covered and because of this, it’s unfortunately beginning to appear as if those particular missing topics have not been done because teachers have not been teaching effectively and that was why teachers are leaving the school,” he remarked.

“I am not here to defend, nor am I here to clarify the aspect of the syllabus that has not been covered; it’s a worldwide issue and it is important to note that if such is happening in other institutions, it’s bound to happen here,” he concluded.

Amie Sohna, the head girl, alleged that there are some ex-students of NSSS who are planning to protest just to dent the name and the image of the school.

“These ex-students have no say or hand in the school’s administrative matters. To them, we say we are not moved neither threatened by their planned protest. We would make sure we inform all the relevant authorities about their planned protest and certainly they will do something about it,” she said.

Meanwhile, a source has told The Standard the board of the school and the Ministry of Basic and Secondary School Education have both intervened to resolve any misunderstandings. ”It is true that some teachers have left but it is not as huge as some are peddling it on social media,” our source added.
