And they launch their first collection at a special evening at the George and Dragon, Chacombe, on March 29. “We’re selling ethically sourced, hand-made men’s and women’s clothing and accessories, all produced in the village of Madina and we have chosen the name Madina Clothing for our business,” said Ms Hewitt, 26. “The clothing has been made from traditional African fabrics but in western style designs. Ten per cent of our profits will go to the charity WYCE which works in The Gambia to help develop the economy.” Ms Hewitt said £2 will feed a child a school meal once a day for a month; £5 will buy a bag of cement to build their next three-block classroom. The company is making a pitch this week for a Speed Plus business start-up grant to help with costs of online selling and marketing. Medina Clothing’s Facebook page gained 300 likes within the first 48 hours.
